Safe Braking Your RV. Control that Extra Weight
With extra weight tagging along behind, it's always best to allow more stopping distance than normally would be required, especially if the dinghy vehicle, dolly, or trailer is not braked. Any motorhome towing a vehicle should always have the capability of making an emergency stop on a downhill grade even after the brakes have been used intermittently to retard speed. However, extensive use of the service brakes can result in brake fade, which is caused by overheating of brake pads, shoes, drums, and rotors to the point where friction between the two is partially or fully lost. Although the brake pedal may feel firm, little or no reduction of speed occurs.
Downshifting to a lower gear can be an effective way of avoiding brake fade, by relying on engine compression-braking to slow the coach. This braking force can be further amplified by using an exhaust brake or retarder, allowing the coach/dinghy combination to descend steeper grades before significant use of the service brakes becomes necessary. This saves wear on service brake components, and can be utilized when the coach is being driven solo. Unfortunately, the need to downshift in order to obtain sufficient braking tends to diminish a retarder's usefulness during sudden, unplanned stops. This contrast with tow dolly and dinghy braking systems, most of which can deliver maximum stopping power almost instantaneously.
