Aquatic RVing - Now There's an Idea!

Aquatic RVing - Now There's an Idea!

There's no denying that RVs -- recreational vehicles -- offer what may be the ultimate in vacationing. You've got your vehicle, room, and board all together in one mobile platform. Why not go the ultimate route and add a boat to the ensemble? No, we're not talking about fully amphibious RVs, not yet anyway (the Patent Office hasn't gotten back to us on that) -- but there's no reason you can't attach a boat trailer where you'd normally hitch a car. Who needs a car anyway?

The best of all worlds

Hook a nice boat to the RV, and you've got the best of all vacation worlds, aquatic and terrestrial (we'll leave the flying to someone else). If you want to camp on a lovely lake but really want to get back into the wilderness, just throw your hiking backpacks and bedrolls into your boat, get it into the water, and away you go -- possibly where no person has gone before. Be sure to take along your fly rods, because you just might run into some trout naïve enough to believe those fluffy barbed things are real bugs. If you've got a decent boat it could include its own water supply; just make sure you fill up before leaving, check your boat water filters, and you're off on an adventure you won't soon forget.

Meanwhile, back on Earth

Even if the boating mood never strikes, there's no denying the attractiveness of the RVing lifestyle. Some folks work all their lives just so they can spend their golden years tooling around the country in what amounts to their own private touring bus. Many older couples (and more than a few younger ones!) have even given up the old tie-me-down family home in favor of an RV. Think of the advantages: no mortgage; no property taxes; a different view every morning, if you like; the freedom of the open road; no schedules to mind; the opportunity to visit (and annoy) a different set of relatives every week... the possibilities are endless.

Of course, we're aware that it's not all carefree traveling. There's the gasoline bill, the unfortunate need to empty the graywater and blackwater containers occasionally, the occasional high-speed chase to avoid the cops (just kidding!), and of course the requirement that you keep a close eye on your RV water filters lest your ice tea start tasting like LA smog. But how does that compare to frozen pipes, snow shoveling, lawn mowing, heating/AC bills, and termites? Very favorably, we think -- so keep your chin up and work toward the day when you, too, can cast your cares aside, spend your children's inheritance, and hit the road in a thirty-foot Winnebago. Who knows, maybe by then they'll have invented RV hovercraft -- or our patent application for amphibious RVs will have come through!
